A deadly railway accident in the southern state of Oaxaca has caused the fatalities of at least 13 people, an incident likely to revive opposition criticisms regarding the speed and handling of the country's flagship infrastructure initiatives.
The accident occurred on the Interoceanic Train, a rail link built to connect the Atlantic and Pacific Ocean across the thinnest stretch of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This initiative was created to offer an different freight railway path to the Panama Canal, with the goal of spurring commercial progress in the area.
“We will meticulously determine what caused this tragedy,” affirmed the country's president.
The president confirmed that, of the approximately 250 people on board, another 98 were hurt, with five of those in grave condition. The official stated plans to visit Oaxaca to meet those impacted.
Flagship Project of Former Government
The Interoceanic Train was a cornerstone development scheme of the immediate past president, whose time in office concluded the year before. This rail line was a hallmark of his government's developmental vision for the southeastern region.
Another ambitious rail project from that period, a tourist and cargo loop around the Yucatán Peninsula, was also central to the wider plan to stimulate the economic fortunes of a historically poorer part of the country.
Project Execution and Worries
The building of both rail lines was managed by the army, marking a notable expansion of its duties in civilian projects. They were completed at an fast-tracked speed, surpassing expectations to be at least partly launched before the end of that administration.
However, this rushed timetable had simultaneously sparked persistent questions over construction quality.
- Sunday's accident was the third event on the Interoceanic Train this year.
- This encompasses an prior accident this month when a train hit a truck at a level crossing.
- The other major rail project has also seen several non-lethal derailments.
Appeals for Review and Suspension
In the aftermath of the catastrophe, the leader of a major opposition party urged an urgent suspension in the construction and operation of all comparable projects.
This pause was requested until the completion of a full independent investigation. The party stated that the tragedy "requires prompt explanations."
In response, the head of state asserted that the train had been functioning in total compliance with all safety requirements. Assurances were given that the government would be "responsible" in both the construction and running of these strategic initiatives.
