TikTok Grants The Community Power to Decrease AI-Generated Media in Their Feeds

TikTok is introducing a new feature that permits them to cut down on the volume of AI-made content appearing in their timelines. This step comes as the company revealed that it currently hosts over 1 billion AI-generated clips.

Trial and Implementation

This change is in a pilot phase over the next few weeks before a widespread release. This development aligns with a surge in AI-generated material, fueled by emerging AI video creators.

The Broader AI Trend

It has been noted that approximately 10% of the fastest-growing channels on a popular video site primarily display content made by AI. A considerable share of this content is deemed low-quality AI content, a label for substandard, mass-produced content that is frequently absurd or bizarre.

Based on user feedback that many people enjoy content created using AI tools, from computer-generated images to informative clips, and we want to offer the community the option to see more or less of that, based on their own preferences,” stated a spokesperson.

Scale of AI Content

TikTok shared that there are currently 1.3bn videos on its network identified as artificially created. Overall, over 100 million media items are added to the platform daily, making AI-generated material a minor part of its total content library.

How to Adjust Settings

Users will be able to decrease or raise the volume of AI content they view by opening the “manage topic” option in the app and choosing “AI-generated content”. Other topics that can already be controlled under the filter encompass current affairs, fashion, beauty, and dance.

AI Disclosure Rules

Its rules oblige creators to tag convincing AI-generated content, and it bans dangerous fake videos of well-known individuals or critical incidents. Any believable AI-generated clip that is not labeled can be deleted under its community policies.

Additionally, the platform will henceforth add an “AI-made” tag to content created with its proprietary AI systems, or identified by an collaborative effort for recognizing content made by AI. This measure is intended to deter users from attempting to evade the tagging system.

AI Literacy Programs

TikTok is also introducing a $2 million AI literacy fund for experts and groups to produce informative material about responsible artificial intelligence. This project will assist educational bodies specializing in training coding and technology.

Content Safety Approach

The video-sharing app has defended its content review process, during controversy over intentions to cut jobs for hundreds of safety staff in the UK. It is expected to cut a significant number of roles in its content moderation department in London, with worker representatives and online safety experts voicing alarm that humans are being replaced by automated systems.

A trust and safety lead explained that people-led review would remain essential, but artificial intelligence can safeguard staff by eliminating the most graphic content before it gets reviewed by humans. TikTok announced a notable drop in shocking and graphic content reviewed by content reviewers over the previous year due to intervention by its automated systems.

We believe it is crucial to balance humans and technology to keep the platform safe,” the official commented. “We’ll have people as part of that process, but we additionally believe it’s very important to minimize viewing of unsafe media as quickly as possible, which is the area in which a extensive automated help is proving valuable process content quickly.”
